PHIL MINTON, KRITON BEYER, JOHN HUGHES, CHAD POPPLE
Phil Minton: voice
Kriton Beyer: daxophone
Chad Popple: percussion
John Hughes: double bass
Phil Minton, is known for his remarkable extended vocal techniques: breathing, murmuring, grumbling, whispering, whistling, burping, rattling, screaming, moaning – from shrill highs to rumbling lows, all are part of his unique musical vocabulary and are paired with his extraordinary, unfiltered stage presence.
Kriton Beyer uses his still quite obscure instrument, the daxophone, in an extremely voice-like way, often imitating human and animal sounds and speech patterns that seem to have been built into the nature and character of the instrument. The daxophone can imitate animal sounds or voices, from bird songs to grunts, roars, caws, and croaks; the chattering, cooing and chirping of various animal species.
Minton and Beyer will present their absolutely unique music in duo, then will be joined by the adventurous drum and bass duo of Popple and Hughes for a second, quartet set.
Popple and Hughes have worked together for more than 20 years and have developed a highly sophisticated, symbiotic sense of rhythm and musical interaction. They return to the Werkhaus on Friday the 13th of March, bringing Minton and Beyer with them for what promises to be a remarkable concert and premiere.
